Here is my point of view after having tried the experiment.

My first observation was on both vista and server 2008 clean installs, booting time on Windows Server 2008 is a lot quicker than on Windows Vista.

I reenabled glass and some flashy stuff in the Windows 2008 Server, and did all the required registry and service tweaks, and then did some clicking around and installed Office 2007.

The installation was pretty quick, far quicker than it installed on Vista. So quick, I thought the installation might have timed out or died, I was genuinely suprised to see that it had infact installed correctly.

All my drivers worked, my sound is perfect and DVD playback after downloading some codes works fine too in Server 2008. Even my built in web cam worked. I know some people might not be this lucky, but I was.

I got my messengers up and running, MSN and Skype without any hassles, bottom line if you're too dumb or lazy to get the messengers working, then you should be using Vista, it was designed for people like you. But with a bit of reading and googling you will get your messengers working just as they did in Vista.

another cool thing I noticed was the server management of wireless connections, its a bit cleaner than the Vista version, but its 20 times better than the XP version.

As for development with MOSS and Visual Studio, I have no doubt it will be quicker, Visual Studio in Vista ran really sluggishly, sorry I haven't tested this otherwise would give a more detailed description.

There is only 1 drawback or limitation to Windows Server 2008. Windows Media Centre does not work, but even as you're reading this there are people trying to get this to work, I think one day the problem will be solved, and after that I will have no more need for crappy windows Vista.
